UX Immersion: Mobile

In April 2013, I got the opportunity to attend the User Experience Immersion: Mobile (UXIM) conference in Seattle, WA. It was amazing. Having only been a user experience designer for 6 months or so, I was eager to learn all I could at the conference, and signed up for the lectures that most interested me.

The majority of the images posted here are from the Workshop by Kelly Goto, "Prototyping  for Mobile Design." I had little experience with prototypes used in design, so I was eager to learn the process, and function they had. I learned how important prototypes really are in the design process, to show the functionality of the site, internally or to the client.

We discussed the differences between native applications and web applications, and the great debate between the two (which is better?).  Kelly went over many different prototyping tools, from highest fidelity (Divshot, Easel) to lowest fidelity (Pop! app).

My favorite part of the workshop was when we broke into groups, chose a prototyping tool, and actually designed and tested an app of our own creation, using the prototype in user testing.  My group created an app to help conference attendee's find friends/network with others easier. Wd designed a GPS system to show attendees that are similar to you, using a faceted search function. We tested the app on people at the conference, and took notes on the user's experience through the site. Check it out!

In addition to the workshop, I attended several talks from great UX minds such as Karen Mcgrane, Cyd Harrell, and Luke Wroblewski. These talks not only astounded and amazed me, but they solidified my love for all things user experience.
